Ernst R. Wendland, Discourse Perspectives on Hebrew Poetry in the Scriptures, [1994], 40 The first significant difficulty concerns the second-last word of verse 3 (Hebrew, verse 4). The kethiv is miyyoredey, literally "from the ones going down" (i.e., into the pit), whereas the qere suggests a somewhat irregular infinitive construct plus suffix: miyyordi "from my going down."
Ernst R. Wendland, Discourse Perspectives on Hebrew Poetry in the Scriptures, [1994], "from those going down into the pit" (Ps 30.4) is formulaic in nature and is found elsewhere in an analogous form in the book of Psalms. We note especially a simmilar passage in Psalm 28, namely, verse 1: "with those going down [into the pit]" (which in turn is exactly the same as Psa 143.7).
Ernst R. Wendland, Discourse Perspectives on Hebrew Poetry in the Scriptures, [1994], 41 If the hypothetical setting proposed above in accordance with the psalm's assigned title is valid, then a plural reference is more likely here than the personal singular. Thus "those who went down into the grave" would be a poetic description of the 70,000 men who died as a result of the plague which David's proud census provoked upon Israel (1 Kr 21:14). The LORD mercifully spared the perpetrator himself, the royal poet, who gratefully responds with this song of self-censure and divine praise (1 Kr. 21.13; cp. Psa 30.2-3).
